Denver couple cancel trip to Italy to volunteer at Ukrainian border

DENVER (KDVR) — Cheri and Michael Foss had planned a vacation to Italy in April, but after seeing all that is happening in Ukraine, the Denver couple canceled their trip and went to help Ukrainian refugees instead.

Les Fosses volunteered to World Central Cuisinean organization that has provided millions of meals in the region.

They worked on the border at Medyka, helping refugees crossing from Ukraine into Poland.

“Probably 90% of the families that came, the men are left to fight, and just a lot of tears, a lot of confusion, and just trying to be there for them emotionally, providing them with food. We were giving them food while they were crossing,” Cheri said.

Now back home in Denver, the couple said they worked 12-hour days for a week handing out food and doing whatever they could to provide comfort. This included trying to help with children or pets.

“You would see a woman once in a while who is just in tears, and you would try to help, but in most cases you couldn’t. They are afraid of what they left behind. They are afraid for their future,” Michael said.

The couple also saw messages from other volunteers asking for help with evacuations.

“They’ll say someone’s going to Warsaw?” I have three wives and two children, and this is where I am,” Cheri explained.

The couple said they were changed by their experience and inspired by the passion Ukrainians have for their country. The Fosses are now trying to plan a trip back.

“If you have the ability to do it, to move past it and be a part of it, it will change your life,” Michael said.
