Italy-Argentina: Euro 2020 winners will face Copa America champions in intercontinental match

European champion Italy will face Copa America winner Argentina next June.

UEFA, the governing body of European football, said an agreement had been reached to play three editions of the intercontinental match.

UEFA have said the exact date and location of the game have yet to be confirmed, but that Napoli will be a candidate.

A match between the continental champions is the latest step in closer cooperation between UEFA and its South American counterpart, Conmebol.

The pursuit of cooperation between the two confederations is accompanied both opposed to Fifa’s proposals reform the international calendar, which includes World Cups every two years.

Champions from each continent’s premier club competition have met every year since 1960, before the match merged with the Fifa Club World Cup in 2005.

A similar deal had not been put in place before for the champions of the respective international competitions, the European Championship and the Copa America.

“By concluding this agreement, UEFA and Conmebol express their commitment to the development of football beyond their geographical areas, as a bridge uniting peoples, countries, continents and cultures”, we can read in a press release.

“The UEFA executive committee and the Conmebol board have also expressed their strong willingness to continue working together on other matters of common interest in the future.”

The confederations signed a renewed memorandum of understanding in February 2020, and a joint office will be opened in London to work on future projects.
