Simona Quadarella says she is “fine” after gastroenteritis, takes trip to Tokyo

TOKYO OLYMPIC GAMES 2020

  • Friday July 22 – Sunday August 8, 2021
  • Swimming: from Saturday July 24 to Sunday August 1, 2021
  • Tokyo, Japan

Italian Olympian Simona Quadarella left for Tokyo yesterday morning, with teenager Giulia Vetrano and a 20 year old Anna Chiara Mascolo. Quadarella left for Tokyo late with the couple due to gastroenteritis, which is essentially a short-term inflammation or infection of the digestive system. Gastroenteritis usually clears up within a few days and, for this reason, Quadarella had to stay in Rome for a few more days, until she was healthy enough to travel.

Quadarella told Ansa.it reporters at Fiumicino airport that she was “fine”. Here is the full quote from Quadarella, which is translated from the original Italian:

“Now I’m fine, I have fully recovered: I had a flu virus for a few days. I may have already been able to leave these days with the main body of the team but I preferred to watch myself at home. And the emotion begins to rise. I couldn’t wait to leave and seeing the photos of the other companions made me nervous not to be with them. But now I’m really happy. I’ve been waiting for this moment for five years and let’s see what will happen: I’m ready, full of energy, excited. I won’t look at other opponents much because I will always look at myself more. There are strong opponents and we will all be there to play for that ”

Quadarella is entered in the 400 freestyle, 800 freestyle and 1500 freestyle women. She is one of the top contenders for medals in the 800 and 1500, at the very least, having won gold in the 1500 at the 2019 Worlds and silver in the 800 freestyle.
