Tsitsipas will get vaccinated after saying he would only do it if mandatory

Stefanos Tsitsipas plans to be vaccinated against COVID-19, having previously said he would only do so if the ATP Tour made it mandatory.

Greek world number three Tsitsipas revealed last month that he would not get a hit due to concerns about side effects.

The ATP Tour has persisted in encouraging players to get vaccinated, with Novak Djokovic the most prominent to have said he is opposed to it, and Tsitsipas has now returned to his original position.

“I’m going to get the shot this year,” the 23-year-old told Antenna TV. “So I can go to restaurants and stores. I support everyone who gets vaccinated.

“I’m not a doctor, I’m a tennis player, so maybe I don’t have the strongest opinion when it comes to medical issues.”

The Roland Garros finalist has been the subject of backlash in his homeland following his initial comments on the vaccine, with a series of personalities questioning his thought process.

“The COVID-19 vaccine has not been sufficiently tested because it is new and has side effects,” Tsitsipas said.

“I know people who have had it. I’m not against it, I just don’t see any reason for someone my age to get vaccinated. [yet].

“For us young people, I think it’s good to pass the virus on because we are going to develop immunity.

“I don’t see it as something bad. Like I said, it doesn’t have to be, everyone has the freedom to decide for themselves what is right and what is not. at some point we should all do it, I’m not saying the opposite.

“The time will come when we won’t have a lot of options, but until then I want to see a better version of the vaccine that gives us more advantages than disadvantages.”

Tsitsipas is set to play for the European squad at the Laver Cup this week after missing the Davis Cup match between Greece and Lithuania with a foot injury.
