UK Covid infection rate one of world’s worst, data shows

Ritain’s current Covid infection rate is by far the highest in Western Europe and is only exceeded by a handful of countries around the world, the latest research shows.

This puts the country 12e over 200 states in a global list of Covid infection rates – well above the United States, Canada and all of Western Europe, as well as other former global ‘hot spots’ such as India and Brazil.

A total of 191,771 people tested positive for Covid in England in the week of September 22, an increase of 18% from the previous week.

While, according to government data released on Wednesday, the UK has recorded more than 36,700 new Covid-19 infections and over 150 additional coronavirus-related deaths in the last 24-hour period.

This is about 1,300 more than the 35,420 new cases announced the day before. Globally, Tuesday’s figure was exceeded only by the United States which recorded 84,348 new cases – and was well above the figures posted by Brazil (14,423 new cases), Germany ( 11,780), France (5,859) and Italy (2,962).

In Italy, experts said this week that the use of vaccine passports has slowed the spread of the coronavirus, even though the country has fully vaccinated a smaller proportion of adults – 72% – than the UK (82%) .

The UK government did an about-face on vaccine passports earlier in September, deciding not to go ahead with them. However, Health Secretary Sajid Javid said they could be reviewed if the cases increased.

Fabrizio Pregliasco, virologist at the University of Milan, said: “It is a prudent choice that has paid off for Italy, and now we have fewer cases than the UK, which could suffer the consequences. this winter.

“The pass was introduced to encourage vaccinations, but also helps stop the spread of contagion. “

According to the New York Times – which compiles figures from Johns Hopkins University – only 11 countries reported higher seven-day average daily cases on Thursday than the UK.

These were: Serbia (99), Grenada (87), Antigua and Barbuda (83), Bermuda (77), Montenegro (72), Mongolia (63), Cuba (59), Saint Vincent and -the Grenadines (59), Suriname (55), Lithuania (54) and Barbados (54).

The three countries that have seen the most cases of coronavirus all have infection rates well below those of the UK.

The United States, which has recorded 43 million cases and 695,000 deaths linked to Covid, the highest in the world, currently has an average daily infection rate of 34 per 100,000 population.

India, which has recorded 33.7 million cases and 448,000 deaths, has just two. Third in the world list is Brazil, which has a rate of eight cases.

Major countries in Europe also have much lower infection rates than Great Britain. Germany, for example, stands at 10. Other European countries with much lower infection rates include Sweden (6), Spain (5) and Italy (5).

While Britain continues to have one of the highest infection rates in the world, the country’s Covid death rate compares better with that of other fully developed countries.

The daily average of deaths is around 129, or 0.19 deaths per 100,000 people each day. In the United States, the current rate is more than three times higher at 0.6 deaths per day per 100,000 population.

But it is lower in most Western European countries, notably Ireland (0.12), Austria (0.1) and Spain (0.09).

Kevin McConway, professor emeritus of applied statistics at the Open University, said it was clear Britain’s rate of Covid infection was much higher than most other comparable industrialized countries.

“I think there is a feeling there that the infection level is now very low. We don’t often point out to people that we are way above all these other countries.

“A lot of times people don’t realize this is the case,” he said.

One of the reasons suggested for the relatively high case rate in Britain is that while the UK has been successful in vaccinating the vast majority of older people, other countries have been more successful in encouraging adoption among groups. of younger age.
